38 for 38: Kristen Bones Get Outside + Exercise 2024
My name is Kristen Bones. When I was 12 years old, my Mom was killed by a drunk driver. She was 38 years old. July 1st is the anniversary date of her death. When this happened my whole world was gone. People weren’t comfortable talking to me about what happened so I suffered in silence. I was just told to get on with my life so I decided to put up a front and look “normal” on the outside.
As the years passed, I realized there wasn’t much help for kids who were dealing with a tragedy such as what I had to endure. Additionally, Covid lockdowns brought out even more awareness about the youth suicide rate and the prevalence of mental health issues in young adults and kids. I realized that this age group needs more tools, awareness, and support so they don’t suffer in silence and grow into adulthood still holding and carrying that suffering deep within.
15U Girls Pacific Coast Volleyball PlayDay
The PCVC 15U Girls club volleyball team is hosting a playday on April 20th for 10 teams from across the Lower Mainland. We are partnering with Buddy Check for Jesse to promote the importance of mental health in youth sport.
We hope that our PlayDay will foster camaraderie, fun, and friendship – all key ingredients for mental health. Being a part of a team, and the larger community of club volleyball, provides young athletes with many opportunities to form friendships, develop skills and fitness, while developing life skills such as work ethic and perseverance.
U15 EAGLES CLASSIC
Langley Minor Hockey Association and our U15 C Eagles Classic Tournament proudly supports Buddy Check for Jesse! The primary mission of Buddy Check for Jesse is to destigmatize discussions about mental health, promote compassion and connection, and inspire young people to reach out and support (or perform a “buddy check” with) their teammates, friends, and family members.
U18 HOCKEY FOR MENTAL HEALTH CLASSIC
As a grade 12 student, I was tasked with creating a capstone project as a graduation requirement. Since hockey has been a big part of my life since I was 5, I wanted to base my project around that. What started as a plan to host a small pickup game with my buddies turned into a large-scale event that I would have almost never thought about taking on.
COBS BREAD + DNV FIRE FUNDRAISER
COBS Bread (Parkgate Village) and the District of North Vancouver Firefighters Charitable Society have teamed up again this year for another stellar fundraiser, with all proceeds going to Buddy Check for Jesse.
GREAT NEWS – COBS Bread will MATCH donations up to $10,000!
5 FOR 45: LINDSAY GEE RUNS FOR BUDDY CHECK FOR JESSE
Hello! My name is Lindsay and I have been a HUGE supporter of all things #BuddyCheckforJesse since my son, Owen, received his first Buddy Check talk back in 2018. To say the Buddy Check charity has changed our lives is NOT an exaggeration.
Buddy Check for Jesse has given my family a platform to continue mental health conversations with everyone…and I mean EVERYONE we know. It is a true honour to be able to fundraise for Buddy Check. Any and all donations we raise will be used to continue expanding the Buddy Check message to more and more youth athletes across Canada.
SAANICH PREDATORS
The Saanich Predators once again want to promote awareness around Youth mental health.
We know Buddy Check for Jesse has been impactful in the youth sports community. We want to continue building on that. Creating awareness around mental health has always been important, now more than ever before.

RUN MOAB FOR BUDDY CHECK
My name is Ryan Maskery, and I am a Victoria (BC) based runner who is attempting to run one of the longest endurance events in the world, the Moab 240 ‘Ultra Marathon’ in Utah. I will be doing this to raise funding and awareness for Buddy Check for Jesse.
The Moab 240 is a 240-mile (386km) non-stop footrace through Utah in the United States. On October 8th 2021 I will have 112 hours to complete 9 consecutive marathons. Once I start, the clock will not stop until I cross back over the line days later. This is one of the longest and toughest races in the world. From blistering heat in the desert canyons to the freezing cold mountains, this will test my physical and mental strength in ways I have never experienced before. And I will be doing this for Buddy Check.
GARDEN CITY GOPHERS GO GREEN!
The Garden City Gophers Women’s hockey team has decided to participate in and fundraise money for the Buddy Check for Jesse this year to join the movement in de-stigmatizing mental health in life and in sport.
As a team, we believe the bonds we share on and off of the ice are created through kindness, caring and support. Being there for a teammate who is struggling could make a big difference. There should be no shame in talking about how we are feeling and reaching out when we need support.
You are never alone.
2021 SAANICH PREDATORS
The Saanich Predators want to bring forward awareness around mental health.
We know Buddy Check for Jesse has been impactful around the hockey community and we want to remind players, families and spectators the support that is out there if needed. Creating more awareness around mental health is important, not just under normal circumstances, though we feel with all that has happened in the last couple years it is extremely important now.
We will be raising funds throughout the season and hosting events.
Our first Buddy Check for Jesse event will be a hockey game between the Saanich Predators and the Victoria Cougars at Pearkes Arena on Friday, December 3rd, 2021. Gates open at 5:30pm, warm up starts at 6:00pm and puck drop is 6:30pm. Come join us to help raise mental health awareness.
THANK YOU GREG!

NIKI CLIMBING FOR AWARENESS
In October of 2020, I climbed Mount Doug, in Victoria, BC, every single day to raise awareness and funds to support Buddy Check for Jesse.
I had the pleasure of climbing with other “Buddy Checkers” each day, who also work passionately to help remove the stigma of mental illness. I documented this journey through Instagram and Facebook and raised over $2,000.
I’m passionate about mental health, and I was thrilled to be supported by so many through donations, positive and encouraging comments, and climbing partners.
– Niki Green
OWEN PUSHING FOR AWARENESS
Owen raised $5,000 during his #PushingforAwareness campaign where he did 50 pushups for 50 days to raise money and awareness for youth mental health.
BREAKTHROUGH FOR BUDDY CHECK
Michael Permack, Spire Group and the Boston Breakthrough Academy (BBA) have combined forces to raise $25,000 for Buddy Check for Jesse in a campaign called BREAKTHROUGH FOR BUDDY CHECK (BTFBC).
The primary purpose of Buddy Check For Jesse, a Canadian Charity started by my friend Dr. Stu Gershman, is to educate, raise awareness about mental health and help coaches open the door to mental health conversations with youth athletes.
